Heart Leaf Fern Care Guide

About Heart Fern

The Heart Leaf Fern (Hemionitis arifolia) is a beautiful fern with stunning heart-shaped foliage. This tropical beauty is a popular romantic gift, symbolizing love and affection. It belongs to the Pteridaceae family and originates from Southeast Asia, where it can be found growing in the forests. This epiphyte thrives in warm, humid climates (hardiness zones 10-11). Hence, if grown indoors, you need to mimic its natural environment by providing it with high humidity and the correct lighting.

The Heart Fern is not toxic to cats and dogs, making it a great houseplant for people with furry companions.

Other gorgeous and much-loved fern plants include the Silver Lace FernBoston FernStaghorn Fern, and more.

Heart Leaf Fern Care: Growing Tips

The Heart Fern plant requires a little extra attention on your part to thrive and stay lush and healthy. But once you meet its growing needs, Hemionitis arifolia care becomes easier and more rewarding.

Heart Fern: Light Requirements & Temperature

  • Light: Place your Heart Fern in bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can harm the leaves, while insufficient light may cause slow growth.
  • Temperature: Keep your fern in a warm room with temperatures ranging between 60 and 85°F. Sudden changes can stress the plant.

Heartleaf Fern: Watering & Humidity

  • Watering: Water your fern plant when the soil feels slightly dry. Avoid using fresh tap water, as the Heart Fern is sensitive to chloride and fluoride.
  • Humidity: The Heart Leaf Fern thrives in high humidity (60-80%). Use a humidifier, or group plants together.

Fern Heart Leaf: Soil, Fertilizer, and Repotting

  • Soil: Plant in a well-draining potting mix and add coco coir if needed to maintain both water retention and soil drainage.
  • Fertilizer: Feed your heart-shaped fern every month during spring and summer; apply a balanced liquid fertilizer to promote healthy growth.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2 years; the Heart Fern doesn’t mind being a little rootbound.

Heart Fern: Propagation

The most successful Heart fern propagation method is division. Gently separate the root clumps and remove old soil. Plant in smaller pots filled with fresh potting mix and water lightly. Put the new Heartleaf fern [plants in a warm spot with filtered light.

Heart Leaf Fern: Problems and Pruning

The most common problems, such as browning foliage, are caused by underwatering, accidental full-sun exposure, and low humidity. Trim any damaged leaves to encourage new growth. Wipe foliage occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and keep your Heart fern looking glossy and vibrant.

Heart Fern: Companion Plants & Placement Options

The Heartleaf Fern can be complemented with other humidity-loving plants. Also, it can be placed anywhere as a focal point to make its heart-shaped foliage stand out.

Great to Place on

Arrange your love fern plant with other compact tropicals on a sheltered windowsill, shelf, or desk. Its love for humidity also makes it an ideal plant for the bathroom or kitchen. With its trailing stems, this fern will look great in a hanging basket, as well.
