Plants for Office and Desks: Care & Growing Guide

Caring for office plants and desk plants is easier than you might think. These compact, hardy varieties are built for the hustle. You’ll find them tolerant of missed waterings, low light, and busy schedules, but here are some tips on how to keep them happy and looking their best in any office setting.

Watering, Light, Humidity, and Temperature

Most desk plants for office environments thrive with infrequent watering, about once every 1-2 weeks. Choose low-light desk plants that won’t sulk under fluorescent lighting. They prefer average indoor humidity and stable room temperatures between 65–75°F (18–24°C), with no drafts.

Repotting, Soil, and Feeding

Use well-draining potting soil suitable for indoor desk plants. Repot every couple of years or if roots start poking out. A balanced liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during spring and summer helps support healthy growth, though many small desk plants need very little feeding.

Propagation

Several good desk plants, like Pothos or Alocasia Plants, are easy to propagate from stem or leaf cuttings. Root them in water or moist soil, and soon you’ll have new indoor office plants to share with coworkers or spread throughout your workspace.

Pruning, Cleaning, and Common Issues

The best office plants rarely need pruning. Just remove dead or yellowing leaves to keep them tidy. Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust, especially in air-conditioned spaces. Watch for fungus gnats that are commonly attracted to overwatered soil, and rotate your plants for even growth on all sides.
