Coffee Plant Care Guide

About Coffee Plant

The Coffee Plant (Coffea arabica) is a gorgeous shrub with vivid green, glossy leaves. Its aromatic, white blooms produce coffee berries that you can harvest and roast to get Arabica coffee beans. Outdoors, it thrives in hardiness zones 9-11; if you live in a cooler climate, keep it indoors when temperatures drop below 60°F.

The Coffee plant grows best in bright, indirect light and high humidity. It requires additional attention to its needs. As an indoor plant, it can reach up to 6ft and live for several decades with the right care.

The Coffee plant symbolizes vitality, energy, and focus. Unfortunately, it is not pet-friendly, so supervise your furry friends when near its foliage.

Coffee Plant Care: Growing Tips

The Coffee plant can add greenery instantly to empty corners in brightly lit rooms. It boasts many benefits, but it requires a little extra care to keep it healthy and lush.

Coffee Plant: Light Requirements & Temperature

  • Light: The Coffee plant needs 6-8 hours of bright, indirect light to thrive. Protect its glossy foliage from direct sunlight to avoid scorching.
  • Temperature: Maintain temperatures of around 65–80°F to keep your Coffea Arabica plant comfortable indoors.

Coffee Bean Plant: Watering & Humidity

  • Watering: Water your Coffea arabica plant once a week, ensuring the soil is slightly moist but never soggy. Ensure the soil is never completely dry, as this can stress the plant.
  • Humidity: The Coffee plant thrives in high humidity (60-80%); mist it if the air is too dry, or use a humidifier.

Coffee Arabica Plant: Soil, Fertilizer, and Repotting

  • Soil: The Coffea Arabica plant requires well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with good aeration to grow healthy roots and vibrant foliage.
  • Fertilizer: Feed your plant with a balanced fertilizer twice during the active growing season; stop fertilizing in the winter months.
  • Repotting: Repot your Coffee bean plant every 1-2 years in the spring; use a slightly larger pot than the previous one.

Coffee Plant: Propagation

Use healthy cuttings to propagate your Coffee plant. Dip them in rooting hormone and plant them in pots filled with fresh soil. You can place a plastic bag over the cuttings to maintain high humidity.

Arabica Coffee Plant: Problems and Pruning

Coffee plants (especially the Arabica variety) are sensitive to pests. Other common issues include brown leaves due to insufficient humidity and exposure to direct sunlight. Yellow leaves are the result of low light, overwatering, or the use of tap water. Prune your plant of damaged foliage to promote new growth.

Coffee Plant: Companion Plants & Placement Options

Group your Coffee plant with other tropical plants that thrive in bright, indirect light and high humidity. This way, you can create an easy-care and more manageable indoor jungle with varieties that complement each other.

Great to Place on

The humidity-loving Coffee plant will thrive in kitchens and bathrooms, provided it receives sufficient light. Or grow it with other exotic houseplants that can increase the humidity by releasing moisture in the air. Your Coffee plant will grow healthy near a window that receives plenty of indirect light. Use a plant stand or a coffee table to make it stand out.
