Pearls and Jade Pothos Care Guide

About Pearls and Jade Pothos

The Pearls and Jade Pothos (Epipremnum aureum ‘Pearls and Jade’) is a tropical indoor plant prized for its cascading vines and striking variegated leaves. Each leaf blends creamy white, silvery gray, and deep green tones, creating a marble-like pattern. Originally developed at the University of Florida, it’s loved for its compact growth and refined appearance.

As part of the Epipremnum aureum family, this variety thrives in warm, humid conditions similar to those found in its native Southeast Asia. It’s a long-lived evergreen that grows well indoors and, in USDA hardiness zones 10–12, can even be grown outdoors in partial shade.

The Pearl and Jade Pothos is perfect for beginners thanks to its forgiving nature and adaptability. It tolerates low to bright indirect light and infrequent watering. Like other pothos plants, it also helps purify indoor air by filtering common toxins.

This plant isn’t pet-friendly, as it contains calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate cats and dogs. Keep it on a high shelf or in a hanging basket away from pets.

The Pearls and Jade Pothos is one of several popular cultivars within the pothos family. Others include the Golden Pothos, with its vibrant green and gold variegation, and the Neon Pothos, which stands out for its bright, lime-colored leaves. Together, these varieties offer a wide range of options for creating stunning indoor displays.

  • Adds a lush, calming touch to any room

Epipremnum Aureum Care: Growing Tips

The Pearls and Jade Pothos is a low-maintenance houseplant that thrives with minimal care, making it ideal for beginners. With the right balance of light, water, and soil, this resilient tropical plant can remain vibrant year-round.

Pearls and Jade Pothos: Light Requirements & Temperature

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain its creamy variegations. It can tolerate low light but may develop more green leaves and slower growth.
  • Temperature: Best kept between 65°F and 85°F. Avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature drops, which can cause leaf yellowing or curling.

Pearls and Jade Pothos: Watering & Humidity

  • Watering: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Overwatering your plant can lead to root rot, while underwatering may cause drooping leaves that recover quickly once watered.
  • Humidity: It enjoys moderate humidity but adapts well to normal indoor conditions. In drier homes, occasional misting helps keep the foliage fresh and healthy.

Pothos Pearls and Jade: Soil, Fertilizer, and Repotting

  • Soil: Use a well-draining mix, such as potting soil blended with perlite or coco coir, to prevent soggy roots.
  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer to support lush growth.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years or when roots start to circle the pot. Choose a container one size larger to give the plant room to expand.

Pearls and Jade Pothos: Propagation

To propagate, take a stem cutting with at least one node and place it in water or moist soil. Within a few weeks, roots will develop, and the new Pearl Jade Pothos cutting can be transferred into its own pot for continued growth.

Pothos Pearls and Jade: Problems and Pruning

Common issues include yellowing leaves and leaf spot due to overwatering or brown tips resulting from low humidity. Trim any damaged or dead leaves with clean scissors to encourage new growth and maintain a tidy, full appearance.
