Peacock Plant Care Guide

About Calathea Peacock Plant

The Peacock Plant (Calathea makoyana), also known as Goeppertia makoyana, is a tropical plant with stunning, colorful foliage with a pattern resembling a peacock's feather. The leaves are oval-shaped and have a bright purple underside. Prayer plants are native to the tropics of Brazil. Outdoors, they grow best in hardiness zones 10-11, where they thrive in the shade.

Calathea Peacock Plant care is relatively straightforward. These beautiful plants require indirect light and high humidity. Peacock Plants are also often called Prayer Plants; this plant’s leaves open at dawn and fold at dusk, resembling praying hands. One of the many Peacock Plant benefits is that it's non-toxic for cats and dogs.

Other marvelous Calathea plants include the bright, pink-haloed Calathea Dottie, as well as the silver-striped Orbit Peacock Plant.

  • Calathea symbolism revolves around new beginnings and cheerfulness

Calathea Makoyana Care: Growing Tips

As long as your plant gets bright but indirect light, balanced watering, and plenty of humidity, Peacock Plant care is relatively easy. Here’s what your Prayer Plant Calathea needs to thrive:

Peacock Plant: Light Requirements & Temperature

  • Light: Calatheas need bright but indirect light. The Makoyana Calathea can also grow in medium light. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it may scorch its delicate foliage.
  • Temperature: The Prayer Plant Makoyana grows best in warm temperatures (from 65°F to 75°F). Keep it away from heaters and cold drafts.

Peacock Plant: Watering & Humidity

  • Watering: The Calathea Peacock Plant prefers consistently moist but not soggy soil. Water regularly when the top inches of the soil are dry, using filtered water or water that’s sat for 24 hours to remove any chemicals in tap water.
  • Humidity: High humidity is essential for this indoor plant to thrive. Place it near other plants, put a pebble tray under its pot, or use a humidifier. Misting will also help boost humidity.

Peacock Calathea: Soil, Fertilizer, and Repotting

  • Soil: This plant prefers well-draining soil mixed with perlite or bark for good aeration.
  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced fertilizer diluted by half strength.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years into fresh soil, using a slightly larger pot.

Peacock Plant: Propagation

Dividing a mature plant during repotting is the easiest form of Peacock Plant propagation. Pull the roots gently apart to divide smaller plants from the main plant, and plant them in well-draining, moist soil. Keep the new plants in a humid place with bright but indirect light.

Calathea Peacock: Common Problems

Inappropriate growing conditions can cause a variety of leaf issues. Yellowing leaves signal overwatering, while curling or brown-edged leaves are often a sign of low humidity. Check for spider mites in dry conditions.

Peacock Plant: Companion Plants & Placement Options

The Calathea Makoyana plant is valued for its amazing foliage and intriguing tropical allure. Use it as a focal point or combine with other plants for a luxurious display.
