Calathea Medallion is a gorgeous plant with stunning, patterned foliage.  It thrives best in high humidity and indirect light, but is easy to care for. Considered a prayer plant, the leaves of Calatheas move with the rise and fall of the sun. Watch out for problems with your Calathea, such as curling leaves, drooping, and yellowing.

Low to bright, indirect light.

SM: ~10" tall and a 4" pot.
MD: ~15" tall and a 6" pot.
LG: ~15" tall and an 8" pot.

Pro-tip: Use filtered water when watering for the best Calathea care, or let tap water sit for a day prior. This prevents leaf tip burn.

Calathea Medallion Care Guide

About Calathea Medallion

The Calathea Medallion (Calathea roseopicta) is a pretty plant that belongs to the Marantaceae family. This tropical beauty features colorful, patterned foliage with a red-ish underside. Commonly known as a prayer plant, due to its leaf movement at night, it thrives in warm and humid climates (hardiness zones 10-11).

Calathea roesopicta care is moderately easy if you provide the right moisture levels in the air around this plant. It feels best in a spot that receives filtered, yet bright light that mimics its natural environment. Calathea Medallion is non-toxic to pets, so cats and dogs are completely safe.

Other gorgeous and popular Calathea varieties include the rare and exotic-looking Calathea Rattlesnake and the silvery Orbit Peacock Plant.

Calathea Makoyana Care: Growing Tips

Caring for your Calathea is relatively easy. Check out our expert growing tips below to help your Medallion plant stay beautiful and vibrant.

Medallion Calathea: Light Requirements & Temperature

  • Light: Calathea plants require bright, indirect light to thrive. Periods in full sun in the morning are also fine, but protect your green companion from the harsh sun rays in the afternoon.
  • Temperature: Provide comfortable and steady warm temperatures (65-75°F). If grown outside, bring it indoors before winter starts.

Calathea Medallion Plant: Watering & Humidity

  • Watering: This indoor plant doesn’t like to dry out completely; thus, ensure the soil is slightly moist. Your Calathea may be sensitive to chemicals in tap water, so use overnight water instead.
  • Humidity: Humidity of 60-80% is a must for your Calathea Medallion to maintain its foliage lush and healthy. Mist it in dry periods or use a humidifier.

Calathea Medallion: Soil, Fertilizer, and Repotting

  • Soil: The Calathea Medallion plant thrives in well-draining soil; you can add perlite to the potting mix for best results.
  • Fertilizer: Fertilize in the spring (once a month) by using balanced plant food diluted at half strength.
  • Repotting: Repot your Calathea Medallion about every 2 years or when you suspect that the plant is outgrowing its container.

Calathea Medallion Plant: Propagation

Divide a mature Calathea roseopicta in the spring to multiply it. Calathea propagation from cuttings is usually unsuccessful. So, use the opportunity to grow new plants during repotting by gently separating the root ball and transplanting the sections into individual pots with fresh, moist yet well-drained soil.

Medallion Calathea: Common Problems

Poor care and occasional neglect can cause different leaf or root issues. Make sure you give the love your Calathea Medallion needs to ensure it grows vibrant and strong. Yellow and brown leaves may indicate overwatering or underwatering, as well as inappropriate light exposure. Remember that pests, such as spider mites, may attack an unhealthy Calathea more readily.

Calathea Medallion: Companion Plants & Placement Options

The Calathea Medallion plant is much-loved for its leaves with unique patterns that add contrast when displayed against deep-green foliage or other tropical, patterned varieties. Its relatively compact size makes it versatile for different placement options.

Great to Place on

Shelves, plant stands, ot hanging containers are all ideal placements for your Calathea Medallion. This lovely prayer plant also adds greenery to any bathroom decor, as it thrives in higher humidity.
