Full Sun Plants: Care & Growing Guide

Enjoy your direct light indoor plants in a sunny corner of your home or office and watch them grow. Here are some essential care tips for full sun houseplants

Watering, Light, Humidity, and Temperature

Plants that thrive in direct sunlight usually need more consistent watering, since water evaporates quickly in the heat.

Direct sunlight plants can tolerate several hours of full sunlight daily. They are often much more sensitive to insufficient light than varieties that adapt easily to varying light conditions. However, many indoor plants that like direct sunlight still require care to prevent sunburn and other leaf issues. Use a sheer curtain to shield your high sun plants on a southern window.

Full sun tropical plants may still require slightly higher humidity levels. Increase humidity by using a humidifier, grouping plants that do well in full sun, or placing them on a pebble tray. Misting plants in direct sunlight may result in leaf burn unless you spritz them early in the morning.

Temperatures of 60–80°F are ideal for most full sun plants. Remember to bring outdoor plants that like direct sunlight indoors if temperatures fall below 50°F.

Repotting, Soil, and Feeding

House plants that like direct sunlight need repotting once in about 1–2 years. Use a slightly bigger pot with drainage holes.

For container plants for full sun, use well-draining soil with added organic matter, peat moss, or vermiculite to improve moisture retention. Mulch your full sun plants for pots to keep the water from evaporating too quickly.

Feed your plants for direct sunlight with an all-purpose, balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during the growing season.

Propagation

Most high-light plants can be propagated either via stem cuttings or via division in the spring. Place cuttings in clear water and change it weekly until the roots form. You can usually multiply them directly in soil, too.

Pruning, Cleaning, and Common Issues

Depending on the type, some full sun indoor plants need more frequent pruning, whereas others, like Air Plants, require minimal trimming. Remove dead or damaged foliage, and keep the soil clean from debris.

Watch out for discolored, wrinkling, or curling leaves, which indicate overexposure to heat and sunlight. Also, check regularly for leaf burns, which look like brown or pale spots on your plant’s leaves. Move your direct sun plants where they will receive partial shade in the afternoon if necessary.
