Lemon Cypress Care Guide

About Lemon Cypress

The Lemon Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa ‘Goldcrest’) is a citrus-scented evergreen with soft chartreuse foliage and a naturally narrow shape. Native to coastal California, it thrives indoors as a mini Christmas tree or tabletop accent and outdoors in USDA zones 7-10, where it can grow tall over many years.

As a houseplant, the dwarf Lemon Cypress tree stays compact, making it ideal for topiaries, bonsai, and holiday decor. Care is moderate; it requires bright light and steady moisture, and it is not pet-friendly. Symbolizing renewal and clarity, the Lemon Cypress also makes a thoughtful gift for the season.

Lemon Cypress Tree Care: Growing Tips

Lemon Cypress care is easy once you meet its primary needs: strong light, regular watering, and cool indoor temperatures. Here’s how to help your plant stay vibrant year-round.

Lemon Cypress Tree: Light Requirements & Temperature

  • Light: Lemon Cypress trees require bright light to maintain their golden color. Place your Lemon Cypress plant near a south- or west-facing window for at least 6 hours of sun daily. Insufficient light can cause foliage to fade or stretch.
  • Temperature: This plant prefers cooler indoor conditions, ideally between 55°F and 70°F. Keep it away from heat vents or drafts. Outdoors, Lemon Cypress trees handle mild winters but do not tolerate hard freezes.

Lemon Cypress: Watering & Humidity

  • Watering: The soil should stay slightly moist but never soggy. Water when the top inch of the soil feels dry, and avoid letting the pot dry out completely. Leaves may turn brown if the plant becomes too dry.
  • Humidity: While not fussy, the Lemon Cypress appreciates moderate humidity. Light misting or placing the plant near a humidifier can help during dry winter months.

Lemon Cypress Tree: Soil, Fertilizer, and Repotting

  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a blend formulated for evergreens or standard indoor plants. Good drainage prevents root rot.
  • Fertilizer: Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer. Hold off during fall and winter, when growth naturally slows.
  • Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years to refresh the soil and provide the roots with room to expand. Choose a pot only one size larger to prevent overly wet soil.

Lemon Cypress: Propagation

Propagate Lemon Cypress using softwood or semi-hardwood cuttings taken in spring or early summer. Place a prepared cutting, 4-6 inches long, in moist, well-draining soil and keep it warm and slightly humid until roots form.

Lemon Cypress Tree: Common Problems

Browning tips usually come from underwatering, low light, or dry indoor air, while overwatering can lead to root rot. Light pruning keeps the plant tidy.

Lemon Cypress Tree: Companion Plants & Placement Options

The Lemon Cypress works beautifully as a seasonal accent and pairs exceptionally well with other holiday greenery. Its golden hue adds brightness to mantels, entry tables, and festive centerpieces.

Great to Place on

Use your Lemon Cypress topiary or mini Christmas tree on desks, countertops, or windowsills. During the holidays, it makes an ideal tabletop Christmas tree. Outdoors, a Lemon Cypress tree can be used to create an attractive outdoor display, framing doorways or patios when temperatures are mild.

Lemon Cypress Christmas Tree Pairs Well With
