Large House Plants: Overview

Freshen up your living space with large plants. They’re tall and often have large leaves, which will make a statement and serve as a focal point in your room’s design.

There are numerous types and varieties of large floor plants for indoor and outdoor areas. Choose tall plants with ornamental, eye-catching foliage to add elegance and interest to your rooms.

There are many reasons to choose a big plant for your home. Big indoor plants are perfect for larger spaces like living rooms, bedrooms, offices, or halls. Their abundant foliage makes them more efficient at purifying indoor air. Tall house plants look amazing in interiors and are the ideal focal point in any room. Use big potted plants to fill empty corners or to create stylish compositions with smaller plants.

From impressive tall floor plants, like the tropical White Bird of Paradise, to large pet-friendly house plants, like the Braided Money Tree, there’s a giant plant for every style and preference!

Large Indoor Plants: Care & Growing Guide

Huge plants may look daunting to care for, but they’re not that difficult to grow if you know what they need. There are plenty of low-maintenance large office plants and undemanding big plants for your living room that can thrive with minimal effort.

Watering, Light, Humidity, and Temperature

Large houseplants require less frequent watering than small plants, because more soil retains moisture. Bottom watering is a great option for large leaf indoor plants. Instead of watering often, try deep watering; place your large floor plants where excess water can drain from the pots, and water thoroughly. Then let the soil dry slightly before you water again.

Depending on the plant type, some big house plants need more light than others. If you’re looking for a large plant for a dark room, check out large low-light indoor plants. On the other hand, palms or tall succulents will be the best large indoor plants for sunny rooms. Rotate your large potted plants once in a while for them to get even light exposure.

Various tall indoor plants will have differing humidity requirements. Snake plants and other succulents don’t mind dry air, whereas plants like the Swiss Cheese Plant are happiest in environments with over 50% humidity.

Temperatures of about 65–75°F are best for most indoor large plants. Always check whether your large potted outdoor plants are frost hardy and overwinter them indoors if necessary.

Repotting, Soil, and Feeding

A big house plant needs ample space, so choosing the right location for your plant is important. When shopping for large plants for sale, don’t repot your new plant immediately. Repot during springtime about once every 2 years, using a slightly larger pot.

Well-draining and aerated soil is essential for tall plants in indoor spaces. Add perlite, coco coir, sphagnum moss, or orchid bark to make the soil chunkier and prevent sogginess.

Feed your large indoor potted plants with a balanced liquid fertilizer about once a month to boost growth. Use fertilizers rich in phosphorus for tall flowering plants.

Propagation

Propagate a large indoor plant by taking stem cuttings. Keep them in fresh water until the roots develop, then plant in well-draining soil.

Pruning, Cleaning, and Common Issues

Huge indoor plants require pruning to maintain their shape. Use sterilized shears and remove dead leaves. Keep the soil under your plant clean.

Check big plants for sale for insects and treat with insecticide if needed. Leggy growth in big leaf plants shows that they don’t receive sufficient sunlight.
