Hoya: Overview

Invite exotic vibes into your living space with fabulous, cascading Hoya plants!

Also known as wax plants, Hoyas are vining semi-succulents with thick, glossy leaves and clusters of sweet-smelling flowers. Hoya plants are native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia and Australia, where they grow as epiphytes on trees and other plants. Despite their exotic origins, they adapt well to indoor conditions. Outdoors, these beautiful tropical flowers are best suited to USDA hardiness zones 10–11.

Different Hoya plants can be variegated or plain, and while some are quick growers, others stay more compact. Hoya plants are non-toxic to pets, making these lovely houseplants perfect for homes with pets. Hoya plants symbolize devotion, love, friendship, and spirituality.

Hoya Plant Benefits

Hoya Plant Care: Growing Guide

Hoyas are undemanding plants that are easy to grow at home or in the office. Follow these Hoya care tips to grow healthy, lush plants:

Watering, Light, Humidity, and Temperature

These relatively small plants prefer the top few inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can seriously damage your Hoya plant. That’s why well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes are essential for your Hoya. Decrease watering during late fall and winter when the plants go dormant.

While Hoya plants can tolerate medium lighting, they’ll grow best in bright, indirect light. Brighter light is also needed for the Hoya plants to bloom well. Avoid placing the plant in direct midday sunlight, as it can burn its leaves.

One of the essential aspects of Hoya plant care in indoor settings is maintaining sufficient humidity. Hoya plants prefer 60%-80% humidity. Use a humidifier or place the pot on a pebble tray if necessary. The best temperatures for your Hoya range from 60°F to 80°F. These air-purifying plants aren’t frost-tolerant and need to be protected from cold drafts or shifting temperatures.

Repotting, Soil, and Feeding

After receiving your Hoya for sale, wait until spring to repot. Generally, Hoyas need repotting once every 3 or 4 years. Use a slightly larger pot.

It’s essential to provide your Hoya with well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes. Use a cacti or succulent potting mix, and add perlite, coco coir, or bark for better aeration. Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer once every 2 months during the growing season.

Propagation

Most Hoya plant varieties are easy to propagate from stem cuttings. Use the stems you trim when pruning in spring. You can also divide larger plants while repotting.

Pruning, Cleaning, and Common Issues

Most Hoya plants need only an occasional springtime pruning. Remove leggy growth, yellowing or dried leaves, and spent flowers. Don’t cut off the stems with the floral rosettes, as Hoyas will bloom on the same stems next year. Keep the soil underneath your plant clean from debris.

When shopping for a Hoya plant for sale, check it for insects like mealybugs or aphids upon arrival. Remove any pests with a cotton pad soaked in alcohol; also, treat with insecticide if necessary. Yellowing leaves on your Hoya plant signal that you’re overwatering, while extreme temperature fluctuations may cause your Hoya plants to drop their leaves. If your Hoya plant isn’t blooming, try placing it in brighter sunlight. Don’t repot too frequently, as they bloom when slightly rootbound.
