Bromeliad Plant Care: Growing Guide

Bromeliads are tropical beauties that reward simple, consistent care. They have vibrant foliage and flowers that last for months. They adapt well to both indoor and outdoor environments in warm regions, making them versatile houseplants. With the right light, water, and humidity, they’ll thrive year-round.

Watering, Light, Humidity, and Temperature

Keep the central cup or “tank” filled with fresh water and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings to prevent rot. Bromeliads prefer medium to bright, indirect light indoors or partial shade outdoors. Maintain humidity with regular misting and keep temperatures between 60°F and 80°F.

Repotting, Soil, and Feeding

Bromeliads rarely need repotting, but when they outgrow their container, choose one just slightly larger with drainage holes. Use a mix of potting soil, orchid bark, and perlite for good aeration. Feed monthly during the growing season with a diluted bromeliad fertilizer, reducing in fall and winter.

Propagation

Bromeliads produce pups, which are baby plants that grow at the base of the mother plant. Once a pup reaches about one-third the size of the parent, gently separate it and repot in a fresh mix. With proper bromeliad plant care, these pups will mature and eventually bloom.

Pruning, Cleaning, and Common Issues

After the flower fades, trim the spent bloom and remove yellowing leaves to encourage healthy growth of new pups. Bromeliads are generally hardy, but overwatering can cause root or crown rot. Provide good airflow, keep their water fresh, and they’ll stay resilient and attractive for years.
