Alocasia Plants: Overview
Alocasia plants have some of the most striking, exotic leaves among houseplants. Most of them are textured, with prominent veins that often feature a contrasting color when compared to the rest of the leaf surface.
Alocasias are native to Southeast Asia and parts of Australia, where they grow under the canopies of the rainforests. All types of Alocasia plants, as well as the related Caladiums and Colocasias, share the common name Elephant Ear plants.
Alocasias are relatively easy-care plants, but they do have very definite growing requirements that make Alocasia plant care more suitable for experienced gardeners. These tropical beauties are also toxic, and no parts of the plant should be ingested; keep them out of your pet’s reach. The Alocasia plant symbolizes protection and strength.
While some varieties, like Alocasia Polly, have been known as an exotic houseplant since the 1950s, numerous Alocasia plant types are now available, coming in a variety of patterns, shapes, and colors, including the rare dark Alocasia ‘Black Panther’.

Alocasia Care: Growing Guide
Here’s how to care for your Alocasia plant to help it thrive. Follow our expert growing tips for keeping your Alocasia in great shape:
Watering, Light, Humidity, and Temperature
Water regularly, letting the soil dry between waterings. Allow the water to sit for 24 hours so chemicals, such as fluoride and chlorine, can evaporate. Avoid watering with cold water. Alocasias require higher than average humidity. For the best Alocasia indoor care, use a humidifier, group with other plants, or place your Alocasia in a well-lit bathroom or kitchen.
Bright, but indirect light is best for your Elephant Ear plant since Alocasia needs to be protected from direct sunlight. Outdoors, this plant does best in partial shade. Warm temperatures of 60℉-80℉ are ideal for your Alocasia. Temperatures lower than 60°F will cause the plant to go dormant.
Repotting, Soil, and Feeding
When you purchase an Alocasia for sale, don’t repot immediately; these plants don’t mind being slightly rootbound and can be repotted about once every 2 years. Feed your plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer or use a slow-release fertilizer.
Alocasia grows best in well-draining, rich soil. Add compost, perlite, and orchid bark or coco coir to ensure the right balance of soil aeration and moisture retention.
Propagation
No matter whether you’re growing your Alocasia Elephant Ear plant outdoors or in a pot, you can propagate it by dividing the tubers in the springtime.
Pruning, Cleaning, and Common Issues
Prune occasionally to keep your plant in the desired shape, and cut about 1/3 back before bringing your plant indoors for overwintering. Wipe the leaves regularly with a soft cloth to remove dust.
Drooping leaves may indicate insufficient light or water, while soft, yellowing leaves are the result of overwatering. Always check for signs of pests to avoid bringing pest-infested plants home. Cold temperatures and a sudden shift to lower light can lead to stunted growth or leaf drop, as the plant can go dormant in cold and badly lit spaces.
