Small Plants: Overview

Transform your space with small plants and bring energy and charm into your everyday surroundings!

Small-sized plants range from fleshy succulents and elegant, miniature ferns to varieties with showy leaves or lush, cascading stems.

Mini plants are perfect for greening up walls and other vertical spaces, beautifying desks and coffee tables, or filling empty corners if placed on corner shelves. Small plants, such as Peperomias or Calatheas, will fit in any size or type of room, and many small office plants are super easy to care for. Small potted plants are also the perfect solution when you can’t resist getting a plant that’s toxic for your pets, since they are easier to place safely out of their reach. Other benefits of surrounding yourself with miniature plants are their refreshing, air-purifying properties and amazing appeal.

See for yourself whether you won’t fall under the spell of tiny beauties like the adorable Chinese Money Plant or the exciting Peperomia 'Rosso'.

Small Indoor Plants: Care & Growing Guide

Caring for small house plants can be fun and rewarding, as long as you follow some basic guidelines. Consider their growing requirements to find the best location for their needs.

Watering, Light, Humidity, and Temperature

Water your small plants carefully, as it’s essential not to overwater them. With trailing plants, bottom watering is recommended to prevent the foliage from getting wet, which can lead to fungal issues. Wait until the top few inches of the soil are dry before watering.

Different plants require varying light levels. For a sunny window, choose sun-loving small cactus plants, which can tolerate several hours of direct sun. For darker rooms, choose small, low-light indoor plants or provide your new plant with an additional growing light.

Most tropical plants appreciate high humidity, while succulents don’t mind growing in dry environments. Increase humidity if needed by using a humidifier or grouping several plants in one area.

Most plants grow best at temperatures of 65–80°F. Avoid placing them in drafts from doors and windows. Small outdoor plants that aren’t frost-tolerant need to be brought indoors for the winter.

Repotting, Soil, and Feeding

Repot small indoor plants for sale into a bigger pot in around 6 months or 1 year, especially if the plant is growing fast. Water your plant before repotting to prevent damage to the roots. Choose a well-draining soil and a pot with drainage holes. Add perlite or orchid bark to aid aeration.

During spring and summer, feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer. However, try not to overfertilize your plants, as this can burn the delicate roots. Dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended dose.

Propagation

Wait until your plant is mature before propagating it. Some varieties can be propagated via leaf or stem cuttings, while others are easier to propagate by division.

Pruning, Cleaning, and Common Issues

Tiny potted plants are neat, usually fitting in compact spaces. In time, however, some varieties will require pruning to maintain their shape. Trim any damaged or dead leaves, and keep the soil clean from debris.

Yellowing leaves are the result of poor drainage, while crisp brown tips show that your plant is struggling with insufficient water or low humidity.
